WHO IS THE 8TH EAST GRINSTEAD SCOUTS?
The 8th East Grinstead Scout Group is one of the smaller groups in the East Grinstead District but we pride ourselves on being one of the friendliest offering quality Scouting to children (both boys and girls) from a variety of backgrounds and irrespective of abilities. The Sections meet in St Mary’s Church Hall, Windmill Lane.The Group’s flags are displayed in St Mary’s Church and Church parades are held there twice a year – Mothering Sunday and Harvest Festival. We also attend the District St George’s Day Parade to renew our Promise and the Cubs and Scouts take part in the Royal British Legion Remembrance Day Parade.
ACTIVITIES AND CAMPS!
Both the Cubs and Scouts go on weekends away and have a summer camp. All three sections join in with District Activities; Beavers have a Christingle, Christmas Party, a fun based Challenge afternoon and a summer evening’s campfire with camp-fire songs. Cubs have Raksha’s Trophy and Bowling. Scouts have a Challenge Hike competition weekend with a Marathon two day hike, testing their hiking, orienteering and cooking skills. Every four years there is a West Sussex International camp at Ardingly Show Ground for Scouts and Guides with young people from all over the world attending.
Within the group, activities are based around a programme defined by the Scout Association, developing skills and interests that lead, ultimately, to the Chief Scout’s Award – on a par with the DofE Gold. Scouting gives young people and adults alike, the chance to have fun and try activities and challenges away from the normal stresses of school and work. The children learn teamwork, leadership skills, respect for themselves, other people and the countryside, and a sense of community – all things that stand them in good stead throughout their lives. Leaders and helpers have the satisfaction of knowing that they have played a part in producing fair minded, responsible individuals while having more fun than they ever could have imagined! Scouting was established in 1907 as an open and inclusive organisation with the current Equal Opportunities Policy put in place in 1996. This policy supports the principle that no member should be discriminated against on the basis of their class, gender, ethnic background, nationality, sexuality, mental or physical ability and political or religious belief.
